The Sumatra is a Beautiful breed of chicken native of the island of Sumatra.
Chickens were originally imported from Sumatra in 1847 to the U.S. and Europe for the purpose of cockfighting, but today the breed is kept for exhibition. 1883 is the year the Black Sumatra was first inducted into the American Standard of Perfection.
Sumatras are primarily an ornamental breed kept for their attractive plumage.
Most often they are pitch black with a green sheen throughout the body and tail.
The breed additionally comes in blue and rare white varieties.
Males usually weigh between 4 and 5 pounds, and females weigh between 31⁄2 and 4 pounds Our bantams are much smaller and lighter.
Our Hens lay about 120-130 small white eggs a year.
The sumatras head has an intelligent, wild-bird appearance with a small pea comb, tiny or no wattles, and large dark eye, thel skin colour is a ripe mulbery.
The legs are glossy slate blue, and the cocks frequently have a cluster of several spurs on each leg (a breed peculiarity).
Both sexes have a long tail carried low, but the male has a particularly impressive heavy sweep of long, curving, sharply pointed tail feathers.
The breed is considered a primitive one; the Sumatra retains a strong flying ability, unlike most modern chicken breeds.
The males canl fight for dominance, but unlike most breeds, they usually do not fight to the death we have three boys living togther and no fights or problems !
My breeding trio of sumatra were from purchased from Richard Billsons (poultry club of GB) show birds in 2010 which i bought from him just before he died .
